U.S. women's basketball team sets records in Rio

Senegal 56

Team USA crushed Senegal in their opening game at the Olympics in Rio on Sunday morning, breaking three women's basketball records.

"The Americans were not expected to be challenged on Sunday by Senegal, and the only real suspense was how many records they would set," said the Associated Press. When it was all said and done, the U.S. women's team broke records for the most points scored in a game, margin of victory and assists.

They broke their previous record for points scored – 114. That was set in Barcelona at the 1992 games, and reached again in London in 2012, according to NBC Olympics.

Team USA may have played well, but the fans in attendance were cheering for the underdog. Brazilian fans booed the U.S. and cheered when Senegal scored, according to multiple reports.

However, the Americans are used to a negative crowd, said AP. In fact, "it should be a common theme as Team USA is on its way to a sixth straight gold," wrote SB Nation.

Minnesota Lynx Players

One-third of the 12 player roster for the U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team are Minnesota Lynx players, and their head coach Cheryl Reeve is also one of the assistant coaches.

Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles helped the U.S. bring home gold medals in 2008 and 2012, while Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen were new to the roster 2012 at the games.

Fowles finished with 15 points – tied for the team lead with Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi. She also had 9 rebounds.

Fowles and Whalen were on fire in the third quarter scoring 16 points in total – which was more than half of Team USA's points that quarter, according to USA Basketball.

"Maya Moore was especially ferocious for the Red, White and Blue," wrote NBC Olympics. She had three steals, four rebounds and nine points.

Augustus played a solid game, with four of almost everything.

Yet today's records were really an overall team effort.

Each player had at least 13 minutes on the court and scored at least four points, while seven of them scored in double figures, reported Yahoo.
