United States soccer fails to qualify for the World Cup with a loss to Trinidad and Tobago

The most embarrassing loss in U.S. soccer history.

The United States men's nation soccer team hit rock bottom with a 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.

With the defeat, the USMNT failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the first time it's failed to qualify for the biggest sporting event on the planet since 1986. Many are calling it the most embarrassing defeat in U.S. soccer history.

After the U.S. surrendered an own goal in the 17th minute, Trinidad and Tobago added another by the end of the first half.

USMNT was able to make it a one-goal game in the second half, but they never found an equalizer.

To qualify, all the U.S.A. needed to do was tie with Trinidad and Tobago, who were in last place in the hexagonal qualification standings with just 1 win from 9 before Tuesday.

But their loss, coupled with Panama's 2-1 defeat of Costa Rica and Honduras' unlikely 3-2 victory over Mexico, condemned USMNT to ignominious failure.

To make matters worse, Panama's first goal didn't even cross the line.

USMNT plays in the CONCACAF qualification region, which sees Central and North American nations compete to reach the final hexagonal round of six teams that this year comprised Mexico, USMNT, Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago.

The top four teams qualify and it's usually cake walk for the U.S.A.

"I just want to say sorry to the fans, all the U.S. fans that were pulling for us, that wanted to go to Russia, that believed in us," said defender Omar Gonzalez to ESPN. "We let down an entire nation today."
