USA opens World Cup with dramatic late win over Ghana

The U.S. men's soccer team opened the 2014 World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Ghana.

A header from John Brooks broke a 1-all tie in the 86th minute and lifted the United States to the opening-round victory.

Brooks, 21, entered the game after half time, because of an injury to Matt Besler. He became the first American sub to ever score in the World Cup.

The U.S. got off to a quick start when Clint Dempsey put the Americans on the scoreboard just :32 into the game. It was the fastest goal in U.S. World Cup history.

Dempsey is now the second-leading goal scorer, all time, for the U.S. He has scored in three straight World Cup Tournaments.

Ghana controlled the ball and the clock. They took 21 shots to eight from the U.S. Only three of those shots were on goal, and the U.S. put four of their eight shots on goal.

Eventually Ghana battled back, evening the game on a goal from Andre Ayew, in the 82nd minute.

But that set the stage for Brooks' heroics as he knocked in the header to lift the U.S. to a victory and three points in what is thought by many to be a very difficult division that also includes Germany and Portugal.
