USA Today predicts Twins will strike out on top 4 free agent starters
After news of Ervin Santana's middle finger injury set to keep him out for the next 10-12 weeks, this is the last thing Twins fans want to hear. But hear it nonetheless:
USA Today predicts that none of the top four free agent starting pitchers – Yu Darvish, Jake Arrieta, Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb – will sign with the Twins.
Its predictions:
- Darvish: 5 years, $125 million with the Cubs
- Arrieta: 5 years, $120 million with the Nationals
- Lynn: 3 years, $57 million with the Orioles
- Cobb: 4 years, $65 million with the Brewers
Missing on all four would mean the Twins likely go into the season with Jose Berrios as their Opening Day starter, followed some combination of Kyle Gibson, Phil Hughes, Adalberto Mejia, Stephen Gonsalves, Fernando Romero, among others, competing for a job during spring training.

This could all change if the Twins prove USA Today wrong, or by signing any other viable starter. There are some others out there, but not to the level of the four mentioned above.
