"This next song is very special to me," said Sir Elton John during a Florida concert last Wednesday.

The music icon was about to dedicate the next few minutes of his performance to some people in the crowd – a small group of Minnesota athletes.

"I'm a huge baseball fan and ... I love watching baseball – always have," he continued. "The Minnesota Twins came tonight. Thank you for coming you guys – you made my night and have a wonderful season. And this song's for you guys."

He was specifically acknowledging Twins players Joe Mauer, Brian Dozier, Phil Hughes and Trevor Plouffe – all of whom were at the show.

The song Elton John dedicated was "Your Song." We've got the video of the tribute right here (or watch it above), courtesy of Elton John's video director, John Steere.

So how did this come about?

As the story goes, Joe Mauer and Sir Elton exchanged gifts a handful of years ago: a game-worn jersey for a signed piano bench, Twins Senior Director of Communications Dustin Morse explained to BringMeTheNews.

Mauer then got to know John's tour manager DC Parmet (who Morse says has a Twins tattoo). He invited the Twins to check out the concert last week at Germain Arena – only 15 minutes from the Twins' spring training headquarters in Fort Myers, Florida.

It's also worth noting, via the Twins, that John is a big Atlanta Braves fan and he moved to Atlanta in 1991 – the same year the Twins beat the Braves in the World Series.

And that reminds us: Happy birthday, Kirby Puckett. He would have been 56 today.
