Vikings fan who vowed not to shave beard until Super Bowl win dies

A life-long Minnesota Vikings fan who staved off shaving his beard for almost four decades waiting for a Super Bowl win died Monday in southeast Minnesota. He was 83 years old.

According to Emmett John Pearson's obituary, Pearson of Vasa Township near Red Wing made a vow to keep from shaving in 1975 when the Vikings, led by head coach Bud Grant, lost to the Steelers in Super Bowl IX.

"I just made up my mind I wasn't going to shave it until they won," Pearson told KARE 11 in a 2010 report.

Any Vikings fan during the era can imagine Pearson's disappointment considering Minnesota was also defeated by the Miami Dolphins the previous year in Super Bowl VIII, becoming the first team to lose back-to-back Super Bowls.

The Vikings would make it to NFL's grand finale again in Pearson's lifetime, but lost to the Oakland Raiders in 1977.

Unfortunately, if Pearson would have lived for the remainder of this year's season, a shave would not likely be in his near future.

The 1-5 Vikings are off to rough start. They face Green Bay on Sunday.

Pearson was laid to rest at the Vasa Lutheran Church cemetery Friday.
