The Vikings are back in action with rookie mini-camp at Winter Park. Coaches are finally able to go one-on-one with the players they coveted throughout the draft. It's also a great opportunity for undrafted rookies and camp invitees to make a name for themselves.
There are a robust number of story lines heading into Vikings training camp. Most of them revolve around Percy Harvin, Adrian Peterson, Christian Ponder, the secondary and rookie left tackle Matt Kalil. One thing is for sure, Ponder has matured as a leader, according to GM Rick Spielman.
Quarterback Christian Ponder was limited in practice this week and listed as questionable, but expect the rookie to start if at all possible. Adrian Peterson wants to play and is close, but with Toby Gerhart coming off a career-best 91-yards last week, there is little urgency.
Christian Ponder's offseason is completely different from last year. Without a lockout, he's entering his second year with a full offseason, and he's taking advantage of it by working hard in the weight room.
In an interview on NFL Network's "Total Access," Vikings' quarterback Christian Ponder said he hasn't stopped smiling since the Vikings drafted left tackle Matt Kalil. He says Kalil is "really athletic" and already doing a great job at OTAs. "Hopefully we have 10-15 years together with the Vikings," Ponder said.
The NFL Draft is less than a month away and some of the top prospects in the draft will attend the Vikings' annual Top 30 event next Wednesday. USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil and LSU defensive back Morris Claiborne are both scheduled to make the trip to the team's practice facility at Winter Park.
Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder appears to have the inside track on what's going on with his disgruntled teammate, Percy Harvin. Ponder told the Pioneer Press Saturday that he's been in touch with Harvin through texts. Ponder said while he's never brought up Harvin's problems with the organization, he knows the wide receiver is preparing for this week's training camp and is "ready to go."
