Vikings tackle Matt Kalil: 'It's the best I've felt in a long time'

Minnesota Vikings left tackle Matt Kalil told reporters that he's feeling healthy at the opening organized team activities this week at Winter Park.

Kalil had a disappointing 2014 – he was slowed by a knee issues and never really got on track – but he said he's feeling better as the team is beginning preparations for 2015.

"From a mental stand point and a physical stand point, it's the best I've felt in a long time." Kalil said.

The Pioneer Press reports that Kalil is tipping the scales at just over 320 pounds, thanks to an offseason workout program that he says has been paying off.

The Vikings are hoping the procedure helps Kalil get back to the form that made him a Pro Bowler in 2012. The team picked up his fifth-year contract option for $11.1 million in 2016.

In addition to Kalil's knee surgery and workout program, the Vikings are making another move that could really benefit him on the left side of the line. ESPN's Ben Goessling notes that during practice Wednesday, the Vikings moved Brandon Fusco from right guard to left guard, where he is expected to play along side Kalil.

Kalil seemed happy with the new alignment along the offensive line.

"He's a strong, smart football player, and it's awesome to have him next to me," Kalil said. "It's definitely a confidence booster having him next to me."

That move has opened up a slot for fourth-round draft pick T.J. Clemmings at right guard. Clemmings was a tackle in college, but the Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has indicated their plan is to keep him at guard for now.
