Vonn: I'm 'devastated' that I won't be able to compete in the Olympics

Lindsey Vonn will not repeat as a downhill gold medalist at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia this year.

Vonn broke the news that she won't be participating in the Olympics via a Facebook post just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

After tearing her anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and suffering a fractured fibula in her right leg in a dramatic crash in Austria last February, Vonn suffered multiple setbacks on her road to recovery.

In November, just one week before returning to World Cup racing, Vonn partially tore one of her reconstructed ligaments in an accident during a training run at Copper Mountain in Colorado. No surgery was necessary, so Vonn vowed to work through it and be ready for the Sochi Olympics.

Vonn then aggravated the injury in her first return to World Cup racing on Dec. 21.

According to the Washington Post, Vonn's knee will require surgery in the near future.

“After the incident in Val D’Isere, an MRI showed an MCL sprain, which coupled with the torn ACL, has made it impossible to stabilize her knee and be ready to safely ski again next month,” Vonn’s publicist Lewis Kay said in a statement. “She will have surgery shortly and is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2014-15 World Cup season.”

The Sochi Olympics begin Feb. 7.
