Waconia girls' 'Fun and Gun' offense could set state scoring record

According to Minnesota-Scores.net, the highest scoring boys' basketball team in the state is Fond du Lac Ojibwe. The Ogichida are putting up an impressive 94.9 points per game this season. The highest scoring team among the bigger schools is Hopkins at 88 points per game.

Generally speaking, boys' basketball teams score more points than girls' teams, but that's not the case for the Waconia Wildcats, whose girls' team is on pace to shatter the state's all-time scoring record.

It's all thanks to a style of basketball Waconia head coach Carl Pierson calls the "Fun and Gun" system.

The fast-paced style of play, along with talented players, has created an offensive juggernaut that is scoring 92.5 points per game. The Minnesota State High School League record for points averaged over the course of a season was set by St. Paul Central in 2007, when they averaged 85.4 points per game.

“We began to implement ‘Fun and Gun’ during the summer as we played in tournaments and in a summer league,” Pierson told MNGirlsBasketballHub.com. “It was done very much on a trial basis. I made it clear that we would abandon it if it was a disaster. Needless to say, our players really embraced it and we experienced a degree of success.”

Waconia has scored at least 100 points five times this season. Unfortunately, they're 9-14 overall because they've allowed 100 or more points 11 times. Senior captain Kaylee Vanderhoff put it bluntly when she said "we really don't play defense."

Take a look at their game log this season.
