Championship Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul got off to an incredible start as Mahtomedi defeated Hermantown 3-2 in overtime.
The winning goal was scored by the Zephyrs 2:44 into overtime as Colin Hagstrom found the back of the net after an incredible pass from JD Metz, giving Mahtomedi the first boys' hockey championship in school history.
As good as the finish was, the end of regulation was arguably more dramatic as Hermantown scored the tying goal with just 21 seconds to play.
Officials reviewed the goal for a couple of minutes before ending the drama by calling it a good goal.
Hermantown dominated the flow of the game from start to finish, out-shooting Mahtomedi 42-12. But the Zephyrs had the only two shots on goal in overtime, with Hagstrom's finding the back of the net for the state championship.
