The softer side of Mike Zimmer isn't revealed in public all that often, but we got a glimpse when the Vikings head coach dialed a couple of Minnesota high school students and awarded them $10,000 scholarships.

The scholarships from the Mike Zimmer Foundation were awarded to Bloomington Jefferson's Samantha Sunnarborg and Zumbrota-Mazeppa's Jacob Bennett.

"Hi, this is Mike Zimmer with the Vikings," the coach said to begin both of his conversations.

Sunnarborg responded with an excited "Hi" while Bennett sounded like he was at a loss for words: "Oh, hi," he said. "Hi coach."

Both scholarship winners are headed to Minnesota State-Mankato where they'll continue playing sports. Sunnarborg is a track athlete and Bennett plays football.

The Mike Zimmer Foundation was created in honor of Zimmer's late wife, Vikki, and the MVP scholarship goes to two student-athletes each spring.

Recipients must be a senior from a Minnesota high school, participate in at least one varsity sport, have a GPA of at least 2.75, participate in extracurricular activities or volunteer work, and plan on attending college.
