Western MN high school goalie stops 98 shots in a game

Is a high school goalie from western MN the new state record holder?

A western Minnesota high school goaltender has quite the story to tell after his team's 12-0 season-opening loss last weekend.

Morris/Benson's Tony Bruns may have added his name to the Minnesota State High School League record books.

According to Minnesota Hockey Hub, Bruns made 98 saves in the Storm's loss at Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Saturday.

State high school league records show that would shatter the previous mark of 76 in a game set by River Lakes goaltender Spencer Theis in 2008 and Moose Lake Area's Gage Mohelsky in 2012.

"I was a little surprised," Bruns told Minnesota Hockey Hub. "My whole career I've had a lot of shots, but never that many. I thought it was just like any other game."

It could be a pretty tough year for the Morris/Benson Storm. They are coming off a 2-21 year last year and the varsity program is really short on numbers this year.

"We have extremely low numbers, right now we have 10 skaters and a goalie," Storm coach Jeremiah Day told the Morris Sun Tribune. "Most high school teams we play are filling out a roster with a full 18 kids, and you'll see a lot of teams we go up against run a lot of two-line sets, but that third line gets a lot of time also. Teams utilize that third line to play good defense and give the first two lines some rest... We just don't have that luxury this year."

But the players are making the best of it. According to the Sun Tribune, Day says players are staying positive.

He added that he's not worried about the future of the program, because the numbers in the younger levels look great.
