With Backstrom hurting, Wild recall Hackett

Goalie Matt Hackett is back with the Wild. He was recalled from Houston today to replace Niklas Backstrom, who was injured in last night’s shootout loss to Montreal. Hackett will back up Josh Harding, who will likely start in goal tonight in Detroit.

The Wild say they’ve recalled goalie Matt Hackett from Houston. He’ll replace Josh Harding on the road trip to Florida and Dallas. Harding, according to the Star Tribune, "tweaked" something in Tuesday's practice.

Backstrom expects to return soon

Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom practiced for a second day in a row Tuesday, and he could return to game action before the end of the season. Backstrom says, "I'm trying to do everything I can so it will be soon." He injured his groin in a March 1st game against Montreal.

Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher tells the Star Tribune there is no way they are trading Niklas Backstrom. Fletcher loves the goalie tandem that Backstrom and Josh Harding provide. He points out that the duo was one of the main reasons the Wild were on top of the NHL over the first 30 games last season.

Wild not ready to relieve Niklas Backstrom of his shootout duties

Minnesota Wild goalies coach Bob Mason can't figure out why Niklas Backstrom has played so poorly in shootouts. Backstrom has stopped just ten of 22 shootout shots. Mason says Backstrom gets "impatient" in shootouts, so they'll try and work on slowing him down before replacing him with Josh Harding.

Wild's Backstrom needs ankle surgery

Wild GM Chuck Fletcher tells the Pioneer Press that goalie Niklas Backstrom will soon undergo surgery to fix an ankle injury that bothered him during the last few weeks of the season. Fletcher also expects Guillaume Latendresse, Pierre Marc-Bouchard and Jared Spurgeon to make full recoveries from their concussions and be ready for next season.
