Wild's offense erupts in 4-2 win over Edmonton

The Minnesota Wild put on a show in front of its home fans at Xcel Energy Center and pounded the Edmonton Oilers, 4-2. The win gives the Wild 24 points, good for sixth in the Western Conference.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period -- a period the Wild dominated early before giving way late -- with Jared Spurgeon scoring for Minnesota.

There was no scoring in the second period, and Edmonton had no chance to score. Literally. They had no chance because they didn't have a single shot in the period. It's the first time since 2009 the Wild held a team without a shot over a full period.

What's best about Minnesota out-shooting Edmonton 18-0 and failing to score in the second period is that just nine seconds into the third period Mikko Koivu scored, giving the Wild a 2-1 lead.

Charlie Coyle's second career goal increased Minnesota's lead to 3-1 at the 6:09 mark of the third. Dany Heatley capped the scoring when he deflected a shot by Koivu for his 8th goal of the season.

Minnesota finished with a season high 43 shots on goal.
