About half of Winona State University international students in Egypt are facing some hurdles trying to escape increased violence and political unrest in Cairo.

The Winona Daily News reports five of the 11 students have returned to Minnesota safely. The remaining students are expected this weekend and next week for the start of fall semester, but getting to the airport has proved difficult.

Bulldozers, tear gas and live ammunition fill the streets amid violent protests. In the last two days, the death toll has surpassed 600 in clashes between the Muslim Brotherhood and military forces.

WSU political science professor Yogesh Grover told KTTC that the turmoil isn't likely to end anytime soon.

"Once people have come out into the streets in the millions, they are not going to go back," Grover said.

Political science major Nabih Elteir tells KTTC that four of the students are staying close to the airport and will try to catch their flight after an imposed dawn-to-dusk curfew lifts Friday morning.
