Wis. WWII veteran and former Green Bay Packer to get medals

A former Green Bay Packer and World War II veteran will be re-awarded war medals nearly seven decades after his service, the Superior Telegram reports.

Alex Wizbicki, 91, who returned from his service with the 6th Marine Division in the war and played professional football, including the 1950 season in Green Bay, will be presented a complete set of Pacific Theatre medals and the Bronze Star for bravery at a ceremony Friday in Superior, the newspaper reported.

Wizbicki had lost his medals, so two fellow veterans more than a year ago applied for replacements on his behalf.

“Because he earned them,” veteran Cliff Hughes told the Telegram. “He had them coming. What he’s done, he’s a real hero.”

The Telegram in 2011 profiled Wizbicki in a two-part series, one story about his early years, and another about his post-war years on the gridiron. Wizbicki played for Buffalo for three years before his season with the Packers in 1950, the year the team introduced green uniforms, according to a team history.

“The reason I played for Buffalo and not the Steelers was because of the extra $1,500 per year offered by the Bills,” Wizbicki had told the Telegram. "I had just graduated from Holy Cross and that amount of money was a king’s ransom in 1947."
