Wolves hold out in tough home win over Grizzlies

Memphis Grizzlies 101

Minnesota Timberwolves 106

Despite a staunch effort from the grit-and-grind Memphis Grizzlies, the Timberwolves got a sorely needed home win tonight thanks in part to floor general Ricky Rubio, who looked fully in control and banked 15 points, 12 assists and 6 rebounds.

1) The pack is finally starting to run

During the second quarter, Minnesota showcased the athleticism of its young core by pushing the ball up the court for multiple fastbreak opportunities. Minnesota absolutely dominated in transition during the first half, scoring 22 points to Memphis' 2 and sparking a 20-1 run to close out the quarter. This uptempo style of play was what many were forecasting for the Wolves at the season's outset, and now that it's finally here, the results are pretty exciting.

2. Shabazz Muhammed lights up the bench

Muhammad's relentless motor was the catalyst for that second quarter surge, and the 23 year old small forward continued to shoot the lights out for the rest of the evening, matching his season high of 25 with a flurry of dunks and even a three pointer. Bazz has been on something of a hot streak lately, putting up double-figure scoring numbers in 11 of his last 13 games.

3. Towns doesn't miss

Despite having to go toe to toe with one of the league's fiercest defensive centers on the block, our rookie big managed 14 points on a perfect 6 out of 6 field goals and ended up just one rebound shy of another double double.
