Latest update from Sven Sundgaard
The National Weather Service has issued a "potentially dangerous situation" severe thunderstorm watch, a rare development as a major system heads through Minnesota into Wisconsin.
"These are rare events & highlight the potential for a derecho to develop tonight," the NWS says. "Now is the time to have a safety plan in place."
The derecho-level straightline winds could reach speeds of up to 90 mph, along with lime sized hail and "a couple tornadoes" possible.
The watch covers an area including the eastern Twin Cities metro, eastern Minnesota, and much of Wisconsin.
