A tornado watch has been issued in southeast Minnesota in advance of storms that begin to rotate and drop tornadoes.
The tornado watch is just south/east of the Twin Cities metro area and includes the cities of Red Wing, Faribault, Rochester, Austin, Winona and La Crosse.
According to the National Weather Service, storms will be capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 mph and large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
As of 2:30 p.m., storms were riding along the Minnesota-Iowa border, with one severe thunderstorm warning in the Austin area. Here's a look at how the HRRR model suggests things will play out the rest of the evening (GIF may not load in all browsers).
Even though the metro area is not included in the tornado watch, strong to severe storms remain possible in the area, although the likelihood is lower than it is in southeastern Minnesota.
