A man died early Saturday morning at the scene of a standoff with police in the Cedar-Riverside area of Minneapolis, WCCO reports.

Police were called about gunshots fired at an apartment building in the 1500 block of 4th Street South at about 10:30 p.m. Friday, WCCO and KARE 11 report. They found a man with a gunshot wound who was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and is expected to survive, KARE 11 reports.

Officers learned the man suspected in the shooting had a female hostage in one of the apartments, prompting a standoff with police and SWAT units, the stations report. But negotiators arranged for her release at about 1 a.m., KARE reports. She, too, was injured, although she had not been shot, police said.

With the use of a robot sent into the apartment, police were able to determine that the man in the apartment was unresponsive, and when officers entered the apartment at about 4 a.m., they found him dead in what appeared to be a suicide, KSTP reports.
