1 million Samsung Note7s officially recalled after dozens burst into flames

Author:

Federal safety authorities have issued an official recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 after scores of reports of the device catching fire.

The lithium-ion batteries in the Note7 smartphones have been overheating, leading 92 reports made to the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) that included 26 people reporting burns and 55 saying it caused property damage.

After Samsung issued a voluntary recall earlier this month and the FAA asked travelers not to use their phones on airplanes, the CPSC made the recall official on Thursday, telling owners to immediately stop using the devices and turn them off.

It affects Note7s with 5.7-inch screens that were sold in black onyx, blue coral, gold platinum and silver titanium. About 1 million phones were sold in the U.S.

"Contact the wireless carrier, retail outlet or Samsung.com where you purchased your device to receive free of charge a new Galaxy Note7 with a different battery, a refund or a new replacement device," the CPSC says.

The Wall Street Journal reports 2.5 million devices across 10 countries are affected, and adds Samsung has been criticized for failing to coordinate its recall efforts with the relevant safety authorities in the U.S.

This in turn has led to delays in providing replacement phones, or solving the overheating problem for U.S. customers.

Note7 owners looking for more information about how to send their phone back can call Samsung toll-free at 844-365-6197 anytime, or go online at www.samsung.com.
