1 person dies in house fire, the 4th such fatality in the past week

A house fire in North Minneapolis Thursday night left one person dead, as the number of fatalities climbs to higher than it's been in years.

" target="_blank">Minneapolis Fire Department said an adult male died in the blaze on the 4000 block of Russell Avenue North around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. An adult female was taken the the hospital.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

It comes after a deadly week already.

Three people died in as many days recently, the State Fire Marshal said, and combined with Thursday's incident brings the total number of fire deaths in Minnesota for the year up to 52.

There have only been three years since 1999 where there were more fire deaths than that, with 56 recorded in 2011, 64 in 2002 and 64 in 1999, the State Fire Marshal says says.

The winter and holiday season often bring a spike in fire fatalities. The Fire Marshal lists some tips to minimize the risk, including:

  • Stay in the kitchen while you’re cooking.
  • Never leave items like candles and space heaters unattended.
  • Keep matches and lighters locked up and away from children.
  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. They give you the crucial time needed to escape if there is a fire.
