One person was killed in a three-vehicle wrong-way crash on Highway 12 Wednesday night.

The Minnesota State Patrol's incident report says a Ford pickup was traveling the wrong direction on Highway 12 in Delano (eastbound in the westbound lanes) just before 11 p.m. when the truck hit a Chevrolet Lumina head-on, causing the vehicle to spin around and hit a third vehicle.

The passenger in the Chevrolet – 40-year-old Mayla Macon of Cokato – was killed in the crash. The 30-year-old driver of the car, also from Cokato, suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the third vehicle, a 65-year-old from South Haven, was also injured, but not seriously.

Alcohol was detected on the driver of the Ford pickup, according to the report. The 24-year-old driver from Waverly suffered non-life threatening injuries.

He is being treated at the Hennepin County Medical Center and when he's released he will be booked into the Wright County jail for criminal vehicular homicide, a news release says.

Highway 12 is a 'cause for concern'

Highway 12, which runs through the western suburbs, has been the focus of a new effort to curb fatal crashes. In November, safety officials from Hennepin and Wright counties joined together to create the Highway 12 Safety Coalition, and challenged motorists to go 12 months without a fatal crash on the 38-mile long highway.

Officials plan to hold a news conference Thursday afternoon to discuss Wednesday night's crash and continued efforts to improve travel along the highway, noting it has been a cause for concern for many years.

There were 407 traffic fatalities on Minnesota roads last year, the Toward Zero Deaths website says. So far this year, there have been at least five. (It's not clear if the figure includes Wednesday night's fatal crash.)
