104 years later, Duluth cop added to list of officers killed in the line of duty

Arthur Briggs died of heart failure, so in 1908 his death was said to be of natural causes. But a little research found the police lieutenant was struggling with an intoxicated suspect when he heart gave out. Now his name will be added to the plaque that honors police officers who died in the line of duty.

Duluth cop is police officer of year

A twenty-six year veteran of the Duluth Police Department has been named the 2012 Police Officer of the Year in Minnesota. Sgt. Brad Wick fatally wounded a home invasion suspect who was involved in a string of crimes. Two officers from the St. Paul Police Department were awarded honorable mentions, Sgt. Bill Haider and Officer Mike Carroll.

C. Arthur Lyman was the leader of a group of employers that squashed unions in Minneapolis in the early part of the 20th Century. When police called for help in controlling a truckers' strike in May 1934, he signed on as a special deputy and was eventually killed. He has now been added to the 'Wall of Fallen Officers' in Washington D.C.

The Minneapolis police officer who punched a fellow customer at a bar in Andover now faces a first-degree assault charge instead of third-degree. Prosecutors cited the seriousness of the injuries sustained by Brian Vander Lee, who needed two brain surgeries. A surveillance video shows the punch.
