Carl Eugene Remmers, 66, died in a river outside Pierre, S.D. after his golden retriever ran out onto the ice and broke through. Rescuers found the dog alive, treading water about 100 yards away. The Bemidji Pioneer reports Remmers pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor and resigned from the district in 2010 after he was charged with inappropriately touching a 17-year-old boy.

Police remove two women from homes after finding at least 50 dogs

The Bemidji Pioneer reports local law enforcement found upwards of 55 dogs and some cats in two trailer homes west of the city. The women were removed for health and safety reasons. The Humane Society and others are investigating.

Winter weather arrives in Bemidji

The Bemidji area experienced its first dose of wintertime weather. Forecasters say snow and ice pellets moved through the area Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately it melted quickly.

Bemidji hunter dies in accidental shooting

A Bemidji man died in an accidental shooting in the opening hours of the deer hunting season Saturday. Beltrami County Sheriff's officials say the hunter was shot by another hunter about nine miles northeast of Bemidji.
