11 Black Lives Matter protesters plead not guilty to Mall of America charges

Eleven protesters involved with the Black Lives Matter demonstration at Mall of America last December pleaded not guilty to charges Tuesday.

The protesters were charged with misdemeanors including trespassing, unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct, among other charges, for organizing the peaceful demonstration at the mall.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for May 1, FOX 9 says.

Black Lives Matter is calling for a boycott of the mall, according to a statement published Tuesday on its Facebook page, and alleges coordination between Mall of America and the City of Bloomington.

Protesters were warned before the demonstration that they could be subject to police action – roughly 3,000 people participated, and 25 people ended up being arrested.

Following the arrests, Black Lives Matter organizers and other supporters collected signatures asking for the charges to be dropped, but prosecutors went ahead with legal action.

Supporters haven't given up, however. There was a strong showing outside the courthouse Tuesday; many people tweeted photos and videos of supporters using the hashtag #MOA11.
