113-year-old Minnesota woman celebrates birthday

Minnesotan Anna Stoehr – the oldest person in the state and 13th oldest in the world – this week wore out her 81-year-old daughter-in-law, who followed the centenarian from bash to bash marking Stoehr's 113th birthday, the Star Tribune reports.

About 170 people gathered for one party Sunday at a church in Elgin, Minn.; another party was held Tuesday at the Green Prairie Place assisted-living apartment building in Plainview where Stoehr lives. Stoehr had been thought to be the world's oldest independent-living person when she marked her 112th birthday last year on her farm in Potsdam in southeast Minnesota.

But she moved in June to get a little more help. Other than that, not much else has happened since last year, she told the Star Tribune.

“Trying to stay healthy,” she said. “I’m just the same.”

Those who know Stoehr say she remains witty and sharp-minded, with a good memory. She likes bingo and Scrabble.

Stoehr reflected late last year on changes she's seen – especially changes in health care - as the world has advanced since she was born in Iowa on Oct. 15, 1900.

In a video interview with the Mayo Clinic, Stoehr last year said one of the secrets to her longevity was baking bread.

Stoehr's husband died in 1998, but three of her five children are still living. "She’s always been up and at ‘em in the morning, going all day long," daughter Lois Neighbors said last year. "It’s always been like that."

Since last year, Stoehr moved up in the list of oldest Americans, from 14th to eighth, according to the California-based Gerontology Research Group. She went from 30th oldest in the world to 13th.
