You've heard of the Fortune 500, well now there's the Forbes 500.

Mimicking its rival publication, Forbes on Thursday released its list of America's 500 biggest companies, and 12 Minnesotan firms made the list.

That, however, is less than the 17 Minnesota companies that made the Fortune 500 list last year, so forgive us if we show a preference for the Fortune version.

Not only are there fewer Minnesota companies on the Forbes list, Forbes has given lower rankings to some of those that appear on both.

UnitedHealthcare is Minnesota's biggest company on both lists, but Forbes has it ranked at 16th whereas Fortune has it 6th.

Target meanwhile drops from 38th on Fortune to 90th on Forbes, though 3M, U.S. Bank, General Mills and Xcel Energy are among those with higher rankings.

The Fortune list focuses more on a company's revenue, but the Forbes list equally weighs four financial data points – revenue, profits, assets and market value – to create the rankings.

Here are the 12 Minnesota companies that make the Forbes list, with their Fortune ranking in parentheses.

16th: UnitedHealthcare (6th)

39th: U.S. Bancorp (131st)

61st: 3M (93rd)

90th: Target (38th)

129th: Ameriprise (232nd)

138th: General Mills (161st)

158th: Xcel Energy (257th)

181st: Best Buy (71st)

285th: Hormel Foods (304th)

337th: Mosaic (316th)

370th: C.H. Robinson Worldwide (208th)

472nd: Fastenal (607th)
