13-year-old girl killed in crash on way back from track meet

A 13-year-old girl was killed in a crash in central Minnesota Monday night on her way back home from a school track meet.

An SUV went airborne on southbound Highway 10 about 10 miles north of St. Cloud and crashed into a tree, killing Ellie C. Sovada, of St. Cloud, highway patrol officials said.

Her teammate Sofia Boyle and Sofia's 59-year-old father Philip Boyle were seriously injured and taken to St. Cloud Hospital, the Star Tribune reported.

All three were wearing seat belts, patrol officials said. A preliminary crash report indicates Ellie Sovada sitting in the back seat at the time of the crash, FOX 9 reports. The vehicle hit the tree on the passenger side, WCCO reported.

The two girls went to St. Cloud Cathedral school and their families were close, Cathedral President Mike Mullin told the Star Tribune. “You couldn’t find two families that are more at the center of [the school] in dozens of ways."
