The family of the 14-year-old boy killed in a shooting in Princeton, Minnesota have identified him and money is being raised to help cover funeral expenses.

Eric Nelson died after being shot at his home on Monday, according to a GoFundMe page, with police investigating after finding another 14-year-old boy at the property.

Facebook post by the boy's grandmother suggests that the boy was shot by this 14-year-old, who picked up a gun that had been left by Nelson's father on a table, and shot it at Nelson.

"This has our whole family heart broken," she said in a later post. "Please please use gun locks don't keep them where kids can get hold of them there are trigger safety locks use them don't let more babies die!!"

Nelson's mother, Laurie, released a statement via KSTP, which described her teenage son as "a strong-willed kid" who had a "big heart" and loved his big brother and two sisters, building things with Lego and riding his bike.

"He had his whole life ahead of him and this was tragically taken away from him yesterday," she added. "Eric leaves behind a full loving family and his memory will always be with us."

A 14-year-old boy was found dead after being shot at a home in Princeton.

The Princeton Police Department said officers were called to the house on the 1300 block of 15th Avenue North after gunshots were heard.

When they arrived, they found the teenager dead.

Another 14-year-old boy, a resident of nearby Sherburne County, was also at the house. Police have not said if he's a suspect.

They did say however there is no danger to the wider public as they investigate the death, with assistance from Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

KSTP spoke with a neighbor, Jessie Small, who said the people living at the house "are a normal family," adding it's "not something that you would expect in this neighborhood."
