14-year-old boy suspected of stealing cars, attempting armed robbery now in custody

A 14-year-old boy was taken into custody in Minnesota Tuesday morning following a string of crimes that spanned several western Wisconsin towns, the St. Croix Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook.

St. Croix County officials, along with deputies from Polk County, were actively searching for the teen, who was believed to be armed with a handgun. Officials say he is suspected of stealing a car, attempting armed robbery and fleeing law enforcement, officials said on Facebook.

The teenager was taken into custody in Anoka County, Minnesota, Tuesday morning, the Polk County Sheriff's Office told BringMeTheNews, after he crashed a vehicle at around 6:30 a.m. at Minnesota Highway 97 and Everton Avenue North in Forest Lake, the Centennial Lakes Police Department said in a news release.

A Centennial Lakes police officer had attempted to pull the teen over for speeding, but he failed to stop for the officer, and a chase ensued on northbound Interstate 35W, before coming to an end in Forest Lake, the release says.

The suspect was transported to Fairview Wyoming Hospital for observation and then will be taken to the Anoka County Regional Juvenile Center, the release notes.

String of crimes in western Wisconsin

Officials initiated a manhunt for the teen Monday following a string of crimes in western Wisconsin. The teen is suspected of stealing a vehicle in Eau Claire Monday afternoon, before attempting armed burglary using a handgun at a home in Woodville, New Richmond News reports.

But the teen fled the residence in the stolen vehicle before police arrived, a joint statement from the two sheriff's offices says.

Police in New Richmond said the teen, in the stolen vehicle, later failed to stop for law enforcement, leading them on a high-speed chase before he abandoned the vehicle and fleeing on foot in the Star Prairie area.

He then stole another vehicle, before abandoning it and fleeing on foot again. Officials also reported hearing a gunshot.

Authorities believed the teen was in the area of Cedar Lake, near the Polk-St. Croix county line Monday night, officials say. The teen was arrested following a police chase that ended on Highway 97 in Forest Lake, Minnesota, around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, KSTP says.
