Research project shines light on U.S.-Dakota War
The Minnesota History Center for two years has been intensely researching the six-week conflict in 1862 and what led up to one of the most heart-breaking chapters in state history, KARE 11 reports. Research of the complex episode included interviews with direct descendants of settlers and native people. The culmination of the work will be on display beginning Saturday, in time for the 150th anniversary of the war.
Wood purportedly from U.S.-Dakota War gallows won't be displayed
The Blue Earth County Historical Society has decided against displaying a piece of timber believed to be part of the gallows used to hang 38 tribal members during the U.S.-Dakota War. That hanging in Mankato was the largest mass execution in U.S. history. The historical society is marking the 150th anniversary of the war. Its director says the group is not trying to hide the timber, it just doesn't have the capacity to display it.
Minn. soldier's Civil War grave to be re-dedicated
The grave of a St. Paul solider who died in the Battle of Antietam during the Civil War will be re-dedicated Saturday at at Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul. Pvt. Edmund Sampare of St. Paul died during the battle on Sept. 17, 1862. The re-dedication of the grave will mark the last Civil War remembrance event in Minnesota this year to mark the 150th anniversary of the war.
Revolutionary war letters from Minnesota collection go on sale
