Officials ID 16-year-old who drowned at apartment building swimming pool in Plymouth

Hennepin County officials have identified the teen who drowned at an apartment complex swimming pool Friday evening as Benedict Richardson, 16, of Plymouth.

Emergency crews were unable to revive Richardson, who was pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool at an apartment building.

A spokeswoman for the Hennepin County Sheriff's office told the Star Tribune CPR was administered by first responders at the building before the boy was taken to a hospital. But the teen was pronounced dead at about 8 p.m., the newspaper says.

KSTP says a crime lab, detectives, and the county water patrol were all on the scene.

In press release issued by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner Saturday, officials ruled Richardson's death an accident. Plymouth Police and Hennepin County Medical Examiner are continuing their investigations.

The Plymouth incident comes at a time when swimming pool deaths have been the focus of attention in the region. 12-year-old Abdullahi Charif was pulled unconscious from the pool at St. Louis Park Middle School this winter and was taken off life support two days later.

Less than two weeks earlier a 19-year-old had died after he was pulled from the pool at Fargo South High School. Those incidents have led school districts to take a closer look at their swimming pool policies.

They also fueled a proposal at the Legislature to require swimming lessons at public schools.
