According to the State Patrol incident report, Kaitlyn Hansen was killed when a pickup traveling the other direction veered into the oncoming lane, striking the vehicle Hansen was driving head-on.
It happened around 8:49 p.m. on Highway 52, between Fountain and Chatifled, the patrol says.
Hansen was heading southbound when a GMC pickup, traveling the opposite direction, crossed over the centerline and hit the teen's car head-on.
The pickup then went into a ditch, rolled, and ejected the 55-year-old driver – who was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She is still at St. Mary's Hospital, in fair condition as of Friday early afternoon, Sgt. Troy Christianson told BringMeTheNews.
Hansen suffered fatal injuries, the report says.
Alcohol was detected on the driver of the pickup, according to the State Patrol report (meaning an "odor" of alcohol was detected, Christianson said).
Road conditions at the time were dry.
They're not sure what may have caused the driver to veer into the other lane – that will form part of the investigation, Christianson said. They'll need to talk to witnesses, talk to the driver, and consider results from a full accident reconstruction.
Whether the driver will face criminal charges isn't known yet. The State Patrol will put together all of its information (including test results for alcohol) into a report, which will be sent to the Meeker County Attorney's Office for review – a process that could take months, Christianson said.
The county attorney will determine whether charges are appropriate.
