17-year-old wins mid-distance Beargrease sled dog race

A teenager from Montana won the 125-mile mid-distance race as part of the John Beargrease sled dog race that kicked off Saturday in Duluth. (The 375-mile marathon race up the North Shore to the Gunflint Trail and back to Duluth is still going.)

Jenny Greger, who has been running sled dogs since she was 6, finished first, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

“I had a great time,” she told the News Tribune. “This is my first time doing this race.”

The Beargrease race got under way this weekend after having been delayed due to a lack of snow. The race was canceled for that reason last year.

MPR has photos from the beginning of the event this weekend.

John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon organizers to meet Sunday

The lack of snow along the North Shore is still threatening this year's race. Organizers of the event plan to decide Sunday afternoon whether it can go on as scheduled or if it needs to be postponed or canceled. MPR reports another ten inches of snow would be ideal. Sixty mushers are currently signed-up for the January 29 sled dog race.
