The 19-year-old arrested in connection with the death of a teenager has been charged with murder.
Wednesday, the Anoka County Sheriff's Office announced Zakariya Hassan Ahmed had been arrested. Officials said it was in relation to the suspected murder of 17-year-old Mohanned Abdul Hafiz Abukhdeir who was found along a residential street in Fridley early Monday.
Thursday, the Robbinsdale man was charged with 2nd degree murder.
According to the criminal complaint:
The victim left his home around 11 p.m. Sunday evening, telling his family he was meeting someone to sell some stuff.
A neighbor told police he heard what sounded like two gunshots around that time, then saw two or three males getting into a silver or grey RAV‐4 SUV and driving off.
Abukhdeir was found dead around 1 a.m. Monday with two gunshot wounds.
The victim had his cellphone on him, and officials say he'd been communicating with Ahmed about a marijuana sale Sunday evening. Officials also learned the suspect drove a silver Rav 4.
Then on Tuesday, Ahmed and his mother went to Minneapolis police to report the vehicle had been stolen. The suspect said his phone was also stolen “a couple days prior.”
Wednesday, police found the vehicle ablaze. They believe it was intentionally set on fire.
WCCO says Ahmed's next court appearance is set for Aug. 3.
