A 19-year-old from Duluth is in critical condition in a Utah hospital after sustaining injuries in a 50-foot fall Sunday in Waterfall Canyon near Ogden.

KSL in Salt Lake City said Sophie Hillmeyer was transported to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden via helicopter with a possible skull fracture and injuries to her hip and arm. The accident happened in a remote area that caused delays in responders' ability to reach her.

“My understanding is while she was climbing, a rock came loose from under her foot, she lost her footing, and that’s where she fell,” Lt. Brandon Toll with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office told FOX 13.

Hillmeyer was reportedly in Utah as part of a volunteer position with AmeriCorps and was hiking with two other volunteers at the time of the fall. The Salt Lake City Tribune said her family was expected to arrive on Monday.

Authorities said it is not uncommon for people to try to climb near the waterfall, but said it is a dangerous ascent. There are signs in the canyon warning people not to try to climb near the waterfall.

“I come up here a lot, and you see kids all the time climb the rocks, even little kids and their parents are there,” hiker Melissa Castro told FOX 13.
