2 arrested in 10-year-old's hit and run death

The Minnesota State Patrol says a man and woman from Hastings were arrested Monday in connection with this month's hit-and-run death of 10-year-old Caylin Donovan near Mille Lacs Lake.

In an emailed news release, the Department of Public Safety said a tip from the public led to the arrests of the suspects, who are both in their 40s. They were taken to the Aitkin County jail, where they are awaiting charges, authorities say.

Caylin Donovan was from Lake Park, a small town in northwestern Minnesota, but was visiting relatives when she was hit by a vehicle on June 10. Her mother, Ginnie Donovan, said Caylin was trying to get reception on a cell phone and had walked to the edge of a driveway along Highway 18 when she was killed.

In the days after the crash the State Patrol had appealed to the public for any information about the case.

Investigators continue to seek the public's help in a separate hit-and-run death that occurred in the same county on the same day.

Authorities say 85-year-old Margaret Ann Johnson was found dead next to her mailbox on the shoulder of Highway 47 about 3 1/2 miles east of Aitkin on June 10. It happened between noon and 1 pm., the State Patrol says.

Witnesses may call the State Patrol at 218-316-3026 or the Aitkin County Sheriff at 218-927-7435.
