Two young children, ages 2 and 3, are in the hospital after being found severely dehydrated and underfed in a filthy home in Sherburne County, KSTP reports.
Their father, Michael Gunderson, 32, has been arrested and charged with felony counts of child neglect and drug possession.
According to the Sherburne County sheriff's office, the children were in Gunderson's care while their mother was working out of state for the past two months.
She returned home Friday to find the children alone in a crib, very weak and thin, and took them to a local hospital for treatment, according to the Star Tribune.
Hospital officials then notified the Sheriff’s Office about the conditions of the children. Deputies noted that both of them were suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A search of Gunderson's Princeton turned up a pound of marijuana and other drug-related evidence. Authorities also said the house was "extremely filthy and littered with garbage and dog feces throughout."
Gunderson told authorities he was at work at the time and had no one else to care for the children, the Star Tribune notes.
The two children were still in the hospital Monday. Gunderson is being held in the Sherburne County Jail on $40,000 bail.
