2 Minnesota chefs are finalists in the 'Oscars of the food world'

Two Minnesota chefs have been named finalists in the James Beard Awards.

Steven Brown of Tilia and Jorge Guzman of the Brewer's Table at Surly Brewing Co., both in Minneapolis, have been named finalists for the Best Chef: Midwest award, the James Beard Foundation announced Wednesday.

Brown and Guzman were the only locals to become finalists after 13 Minnesotans who were named semifinalists earlier this year. The winners of the James Beard Awards – known as the Oscars of the food world – will be announced during an event on May 1, a news release says.

The James Beard Awards don't only recognize the best of the best when it comes to places to eat, but also when it comes to reporting and writing about food. The finalists for James Beard Media Awards were also named Wednesday, and include two Minnesotans.

Andrew Zimmern – the famed TV chef who now calls Minnesota home – was nominated for Outstanding Personality/Host for the show Andrew Zimmern’s Bucket List; Andrew Zimmern’s Driven by Food; Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, which airs on the Travel Channel.

Zimmern was also nominated for Video Webcast, Fixed Location and/or Instructional for Andrew Zimmern’s Kitchen – Online Culinary Literacy Courses, which airs online here.

And in for the James Beard Foundation Journalism Awards, Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl of Mpls.St. Paul Magazine was nominated for her columns: "Top Chef is Leaving Mpls. and it's the Most Courageous Story of the Year," “A Legend in the Baking," and “King of the Roast.”

The winners of the James Beard Media Awards will be announced April 25.
