Authorities have arrested a suspect after two Des Moines-area police officers were found shot dead in their squad cars overnight.
A police officer with Urbandale, a city directly northwest of Des Moines, was found fatally shot around 1 a.m. after officers responded to a report of shots fired, the Des Moines Register reported. Less than a half hour later and just 2 miles away, a Des Moines police officer – on their way to the scene of the first shooting – was shot and killed.
Both officers were found seated in their squad cars, the paper said.
They were identified later Wednesday morning as Justin Martin, with Urbandale PD; and Tony Biminio, with the Des Moine PD.
WHO TV reported police described it as an "ambush-style attack," and said there is a "clear and present danger" to officers in the area right now. The names of the officers haven't been released.
Later Wednesday morning police named a suspect: Scott Michael Greene.
The 46-year-old lives in Urbandale. Police described him as armed and dangerous.
Buzzfeed News also goes into his online footprint, including a YouTube video that appears to show him arguing with an officer who tellshim to leave a high school football game, after he says he was assaulted and robbed.
Law enforcement deaths
A total of 111 law enforcement officers had died in the line of duty through October this year, the Officer Down Memorial Page says. Of those, 50 died from gunfire (two of which were accidental).
Wednesday morning's deaths would be the fourth and fifth in Iowa this year. The previous three died in crashes on the road.
