Suspect shoots 2 officers, then is killed by police at New Hope City Hall

An armed suspect was killed at New Hope City Hall after he opened fire on a group of officers minutes after a swearing-in ceremony Monday evening.

The suspect shot and wounded two newly sworn-in police officers outside the council chambers, and he in turn was shot and killed by police, authorities said. The officers are expected to survive.

The shooting happened after a swearing-in ceremony for two new city police officers – Joshua Eernisse and Adam Johnson – during Monday night's scheduled city council meeting, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Monday night.

Shortly after the ceremony, at about 7:15 p.m., an adult male entered New Hope City Hall with a gun and began firing at the officers outside the chambers, hitting two of them.

Additional police officers that attended the ceremony returned fire and killed the suspect, the release said.

The suspect hasn't been identified. His name will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

The two wounded officers were in "good condition" immediately after the shooting, the Star Tribune reports. Eernisse was listed in fair condition Tuesday, while a condition update for Johnson wasn't available.

New Hope City Hall was closed Tuesday, the city's website said.

Council members scrambled

When the shots rang out in City Hall, city council members and attendees inside the chambers scrambled to the floor, ducking down behind their desks.

Their reaction can be seen on a video recording of the council meeting:

Council member John Elder (at left in the video), a former police officer and current public information officer for the Minneapolis Police Department, drew a gun and urged people in the room to remain hidden.

The few dozen people inside the council chambers were then escorted to safety.
