Toddler dies 4 weeks after ATV crashes through lake ice

The 2-year-old boy who was on an ATV with his grandfather when it fell through lake ice has died in hospital.

The Alexandria Echo Press reports that Hayden Minnerath, of Alexandria, died at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis on Monday – several weeks after the crash on March 3.

His grandfather, 50-year-old James Minnerath, died the day after the incident on Lake Andrew, when the Polaris Ranger ATV they were riding broke through an isolated patch of weak ice.

The Voice of Alexandria reports that they went on the ride in the all-terrain vehicle to celebrate the grandfather's 50th birthday, only to crash through the ice about 200 yards from the lake's eastern shore.

The Echo Press says that funeral arrangements for Hayden Minnerath have not yet been announced.

According to a posting on Hayden's CaringBridge site, James Minnerath "simply doted" on his grandson, and he would regularly take him fishing and on rides on his Ranger.
