Minnesota Congressman Rep. Keith Ellison opted for a message of tolerance as he issued his own response to a controversial tweet by Donald Trump’s son.
Donald Trump Jr. came in for criticism on Monday when he tweeted a meme featuring a picture of a bowl of Skittles along with the message: “If I had a bowl of Skittles and I told you three of them would kill you. Would you take a handful?” before adding: “That’s our Syrian refugee problem.”
Rep. Ellison, who became the first Muslim to be elected to the U.S. House, posted his reaction on Facebook Wednesday, putting a bowl of Skittles in his office with a note: “America is an inclusive and tolerant place. Have a Skittle.”
It’s since been shared almost 1,200 times as of Thursday morning.
Trump Jr.’s tweet provoked a negative reaction from mostly non-Trump supporters, as well as Skittles-maker Wrigley, which commented: “Skittles are candy. Refugees are people,” according to NPR.
It has since turned out, the BBC reports, that the picture of the Skittles bowl in Trump Jr.’s tweet was used without permission or a photo credit being given, and that it belongs to David Kittos, a UK resident who is himself a refugee.
