3 killed in weather-related crashes; snow closes schools in N. Minnesota

Author:

A storm system crawling across northern Minnesota is expected to leave at least a foot of snow by sometime Wednesday, the National Weather Service says.

Areas from Duluth up the North Shore could see more than 18 inches, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

All Duluth schools are closed Tuesday because of snow, as are schools in the Lake Superior school district, Proctor and the Cook County school district, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

Duluth and Two Harbors saw about 15 inches from the first wave of snow. Snow totals in northern Minnesota can be found here.

A winter storm warning is in effect for northern Minnesota through Wednesday night.

The storm system could produce 2 to 6 inches of snow in areas of the Twin Cities by Thursday morning, much of it falling in bursts of an inch or two, the Star Tribune reports. That's just enough to create a nuisance for some metro commuters, the newspaper notes.

Heavy snowflakes made for slippery roads and a slow commute home for many across Minnesota on Monday afternoon. Three people were killed in crashes Monday across the state, the Star Tribune reported. A multiple-vehicle crash left a motorist dead and caused closure of westbound Interstate Highway 94 near St. Cloud at about 3 p.m. Monday, the St. Cloud Times reported.

KSTP reports that Donavan Tesch, 85, of Clinton, was killed in Big Stone County in west-central Minnesota in a rollover crash on wet roads Monday afternoon; and Vera Hunt, 82, of Deerwood, was killed in a crash on icy roads northeast of Brainerd early Monday night, the State Patrol reported.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in this semi crash:

After the snow will come bracing cold, forecasters say.

Below-zero temperatures are expected as early as Thursday night, WCCO says. Minnesota Public Radio said some morning lows this weekend could dip to as cold as 20 below zero.
