3 more deaths bring fatalities on Minnesota's roads this year past 100

Author:

The deaths of three people on Tuesday brought the total number of road fatalities in Minnesota in 2015 past the 100 mark – more than three weeks earlier than in 2014.

The Minnesota DPS Office of Traffic Safety confirmed that collisions in Carlton, Minnesota, and in St. Louis County resulted in the 99th, 100th and 101st deaths on Minnesota's roads so far this year. In 2014, this number wasn't reached until May 21.

Of the first 100, seven of those killed were motorcyclists, while 10 were pedestrians.

Furthermore, following a recent crackdown that saw more than 900 people cited across the state for texting while driving, distracted driving was thought to have caused one in four fatalities.

Speeding accounted for one in five deaths, as did drunk driving, while about half of the motorists killed weren't wearing a seatbelt.

Road deaths in Minnesota have fallen significantly over the past decade, down from 567 in 2004 to 361 in 2014, based on preliminary DPS figures.

Tuesday fatalities

Two people, a 56-year-old woman from Esko and a 32-year-old man from Carlton, were killed in a head-on collision on Hwy. 45 in Carlton on Tuesday.

The Duluth News Tribune says the crash occurred when a Chevrolet Impala traveling south and driven by the 32-year-old crossed the center line and collided with an Oldsmobile 88 driven by the Esko woman.

In St. Louis County, KSTP reports that Jeffrey Seeman, 35, of St. Francis, was killed when he lost control of his truck going south on Highway 53 in Saginaw at 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

His truck rolled over and Seeman was thrown from it. He later died at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.
