3 pedestrians killed after being hit by vehicles in the past 2 days

Three pedestrians were fatally hit by vehicles in separate incidents in the Twin Cities in the past two days.

The crashes happened in Bloomington, Edina and Belle Plaine – the latter being a hit-and-run, where authorities are still looking for the driver involved.

At least 227 people have been killed on Minnesota roads this year, according to the state’s Toward Zero Deaths initiative website.

More than two dozen of those have been pedestrian deaths, with Donna Berger, the director of the Office of Traffic Safety, telling BringMeTheNews in April motorists need to pay attention, and pedestrians need to be smart and safe when crossing the road.

In all of last year, 40 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related incidents, which is about average, Berger explained.

Commercial vehicle crash in Bloomington

The most recent incident happened in Bloomington around 6:53 a.m. Monday. Police say a man died after being trapped under a commercial vehicle that hit him near 86th Street and Nicollet Avenue, the Sun Current says.

FOX 9 reports the man, who hasn't been identified, was waiting at the bus stop when he was hit.

The vehicle, which was pulling a trailer, swerved to avoid a car, causing it to jump the curb and hit the man and a utility pole, KSTP reports.

Man killed in Edina

A 65-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a vehicle on France Avenue in Edina around 8:52 p.m. Sunday, Kaylin Eidsness, of the City of Edina, told BringMeTheNews.

Details about how the man was hit haven't been released, but officials say it happened near Centennial Lakes Park, KSTP says.

The driver – a 52-year-old man – is cooperating with the investigation, and he was not impaired at the time of the crash, however investigators are still waiting for results on the pedestrian, Eidsness said.

The city was hosting the Torchlight Concert at the park Sunday night, followed by fireworks, according to the Centennial Lakes Park Facebook page. It's not clear if the victim was attending the event.

29-year-old killed in hit-and-run

The State Patrol is looking for the driver of a car that hit and killed a pedestrian on Highway 169 and Belle Plaine Trail in Belle Plaine around 5:15 a.m. Sunday, the State Patrol’s incident report says.

The victim – 29-year-old Derek Fath of Belle Plaine – was hit in the northbound lanes of the highway, the agency notes.
