3 suspects in custody in connection with fatal southwestern MN fire

Three people have been taken into custody in connection with a fire that killed a southwestern Minnesota couple.

The bodies of Jim Hively, 75, and his wife, 71-year-old Cathy Hively, were found in their burning Lyons Township home Thursday morning, the Marshall Independent reports.

Little information had been released about the cause of the fire, but now three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the deadly blaze, KSTP says.

They were booked into the Lyon County Jail on probable cause for arson and burglary. Two others were also booked under probable cause for second-degree murder, the news station notes.

The suspects, who range in age from 18-21, could be charged as early as Monday, the Star Tribune reports. Officials say they don't believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety.

The fire has shocked the community, KSFY reports.

"They were thoughtful helpful people," Jim Burns, a friend of the couple, told KSFY. "They're good people. That sort of thing shouldn't happen in a small town"

"It is such a quiet town and you always feel so safe. But i guess anything can happen," he added.

The Hivelys were active members of the tight-knit community for decades, neighbors told KELOLAND.

Friends and family want the couple to be remembered for the lives they lived, not how they died. In a statement to the news station, the family said:

"We want Jim and Cathy to be remembered for the loving, hard working farm couple they were. They were parents who loved, cared for, and served their family, friends and neighbors. They modeled the love and service of Jesus in daily life."

Memorial services for the couple is planned for Tuesday morning at Victory Christian Church in Balaton, according to Hamilton Funeral Home.
