3M Co. posted a record third-quarter earnings of $1.65 per share, an increase of 8.6 percent increase from a year earlier, but cut its profit expectations for all of 2012 because of "current economic realities." The Maplewood-based company, which makes everything from office supplies to specialized coatings, expects to earn $6.27 to $6.35 per share for the year, down from $6.35 to $6.50, CNBC reports.

3M unveils "smart pen" for touchscreens at CES

3M says the pen is more precise than a finger and cuts down on fingerprints on tablets and smart phones. A handful of Minnesota companies are rolling out new products at the Consumer Electronics Show.

CHS profits up 13 percent in 3Q

Inver Grove Heights-based CHS Inc. -- the largest farmer-owned cooperative in the United States -- reported net income of $405 million thanks to strong energy performance. Revenue increased nearly 5 percent to hit $11 billion. The Wall Street Journal notes CHS reported its second-quarter profit dropped 60 percent.
